Tracing Angel’s Men
About
In 1949, the American anthropologist John Lawrence Angel visited Cyprus to study ancient human remains and conduct an anthropometric study of over 80 Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot men from the village of Episkopi. ‘Tracing Angel’s Men’ returns and reactivates this archive – now kept at the Smithsonian Institution in the United States – to raise critical questions about which forms of ‘data’ are considered valuable, by whom and for what purposes. The artworks expand Angel’s archive with newly collected stories and everyday photographs by the men’s descendants, create a fictional hybrid creature and its ‘specimens’, and reconstruct measurement processes.
