About

Art Seen is pleased to present Andreas Kalli’s solo exhibition, The Future of the Past.

In this new body of work, Andreas Kalli brings together sculpture, kinetic installations, paintings and prints, exploring the enduring relationship between the individual and their social and existential environment.

Through movement, material and form, Kalli constructs self-contained narratives of inner dialogue, in which personal experience is transformed into a shared condition.
The exhibition is curated by Maria Stathi and accompanied by a text by art historian Niki Papaspyrou, who writes: “The past never remains where we left it. It returns transformed, as an active material force permeating the present: in the repetition of a gesture, in the familiar that suddenly reveals another aspect of itself, in the defences that have become embedded in our very identity, but also in that which has yet to be realised.”

“Kalli’s practice is fundamentally concerned with that which remains unresolved: intention before it assumes a definitive form, desire before it is exhausted through its fulfilment. In his sculpture and painting, personal memory moves beyond the boundaries of autobiography and is transformed into a space of collective recognition.”

“At the end of this trajectory, flight does not signify an abandonment of what has come before. Rather, it allows the past to acquire another continuity, and memory to become the point of departure for a new direction. It is precisely here, within this open movement, that the past encounters its future.”
