About
Elena Agathokleous’ work ‘The Cinema’ is an act of farewell, exploring how social histories shape our understanding of place and how encountering different voices can shift our gaze beyond one-dimensional versions of memory.
Through the audio documentary on the history of the ‘Taksim’ cinema, testimonies of Turkish Cypriots who lived in Limassol before 1974 are brought together with the testimony of Maro Georgiou, daughter of the cinema’s Greek Cypriot manager, who renamed it ‘Apollon’ in 1975, up to the devastating fire of May 2024.
From the burned cinema (Art Explora Festival, 2025) and the Anagennisi Refugee Association (Festival Cine Volos Neighborhood, 2025), the work continues to evolve through its relationship with each place and audience. At Xydadiko, in collaboration with Fosaki, the audio experience encounters ceramics, inviting visitors into a process of gesture and leaving their own trace.
